Heat pumps

In new builds, a heat pump is now standard - and for many existing buildings it is a future-proof solution. As a heating system it uses renewable energy. To make real sense, the house should have good thermal insulation and/or underfloor heating. Correct planning and a high seasonal performance factor increase the heat pump's efficiency and make it more climate-friendly.

The right heat pump for your home

Efficient heating with renewable energy

Homeowners often find it hard to decide on the right heating technology. An alternative to conventional combustion systems such as oil and gas heating is the heat pump. It uses thermal energy stored in the air, ground or water and extracts heat for your home.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a system that uses the thermal energy stored in the environment to heat buildings. Unlike wood, oil or gas heating, it works without combustion, via a sophisticated technical process. Low-temperature thermal energy is raised to a higher level.

Pros and cons of a heat pump

Advantages

low heating costs

independence from price swings of fossil fuels

financing possible via state subsidies

conservation of fossil resources

CO₂-free operation

Disadvantages

comparatively high purchase costs

the building must meet certain energy standards first (insulation, windows, building envelope...)

high electricity demand

more noise if the outdoor unit is unfavourably placed

Depending on which energy source can be tapped at your house, different systems come into question.

1. Air-source heat pump: the flexible all-rounder

The air-to-water heat pump is the most commonly installed system. It extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to the heating water. The unit can be installed outside or inside the building.

• Special feature: it is quick to install and cost-efficient.

2. Ground-source heat pump: power from the earth

This system uses the constant temperature level of the ground. The energy is harvested either via a borehole probe (deep drilling) or ground collectors (laid over a large area below the frost line).

• Special feature: because the ground stays warm even in the depths of winter, this system works extremely efficiently and consistently.

3. Water-source heat pump: peak performance from groundwater

Here, groundwater serves as the heat source: it is drawn from a supply well and, after use, returned via an injection well.

• Special feature: groundwater is the most effective heat supplier, making this the most efficient (but also most planning-intensive) variant.

While the air-source heat pump scores with low investment costs, ground- and water-source heat pumps win through minimal operating costs in the long run.

In the heat pump field, we have been working with STIEBEL-ELTRON for years.

What should you look out for when buying?

You get the best possible comfort and high efficiency when the pump is matched to the house and your heating habits. That is how you achieve a heating solution that is economical and ecological in the long term.

In older buildings, the following measures must be implemented first:

  • Correct heat-load calculation
  • Refurbished building envelope (windows, facade and other elements)
  • Flow temperatures as low as possible through surface heating
  • Sufficient storage size for the hot-water demand
  • Legal requirements for the installation site
  • Combination options (for example with photovoltaics)

"From the very start of planning right through to completion, we always felt very well advised. They took plenty of time to discuss the heat pump project with us in detail and to give us real technical insight.

The fitters did a truly great job and always left the site tidy. I can recommend the company without hesitation and would come back to them any time."
